Instructions

Allow carpet tiles to acclimate to the room overnight.

Install carpet tiles on a clean, flat surface. Most carpet tiles can be installed on top of sub floors or hard flooring, but not on top of other carpet.

Locate the center of the floor. This can be done with chalk lines. Pull the chalk line from one corner of the room to the corner diagonal from it. Snap the line.

Repeat with the other two corners. You will have a giant “X” running over the floor. Find the center of two opposite walls, and run a chalk line between them. Repeat with the remaining two walls. You now have four lines on the floor and a clearly marked center.

Use a sharp carpet knife and a metal straight edge to cut the tiles to the right size. Turn the tile with the backing facing upwards and cut it from the back. Crack the tile from behind and cut through the top fiber from behind.

When cutting tiles to fit at the wall turn the carpet tile upside down and set it flush with the wall and mark at both ends where the carpet tile overlaps the next tile. Then cut the tile using the straight edge.

Trim Squares Against the Wall. The last step is to cut the carpet squares to fit at the wall. Turn the carpet square upside down and set it flush with the wall and mark at both ends where the carpet square overlaps the next to the last rows of full carpet squares. Use a carpenter’s square or straight edge and a utility knife to make a straight clean cut on the backside of the carpet square. Install the partial square with the cut edge against the baseboard (molding will cover it if it is not exactly even).

The first thing to do is find a can lid or another shallow object to place over the damaged bit of carpet and nail it down. The nails shouldn’t be driven in all the way, but the heads should be projecting. Then, using the lid or other object as a guide you should take a sharp box cutter or a utility knife and cut out the area. Then, you should take the same can lid and do the identical procedure on the remnant.

Find a circular object, such as a round cookie cutter, lid, beverage glass, etc., that is slightly larger than the damaged carpet area. Place the object over the damaged carpet and use it as a guide to cut out this area. Press down firmly with a sharp retractable blade to cut evenly through all the carpet fibers.

Using a small paintbrush, carefully and thoroughly apply carpet glue to the bare spot. Using a pair of tweezers and a toothpick, position the ends of the new fibers into the base of the carpet until the area is entirely filled in. Allow the glue to dry completely before walking over the repair, and before vacuuming.

Vacuum the hole where you removed the damaged carpet and pluck out any loose carpet fibres around the edge of the hole and the surrounding carpet. Place a narrow bead of carpet-seam glue (or contact adhesive applied to both the removed area and the new section of carpet) along the perimeter of the cut-out.

The shorter the pile of the carpet, the harder it is to make a patch invisible. Unfortunately, patching a carpet is unlikely to make it look as good as it did originally, but it will still look a lot better than a big stain or burn.
